Why Japan? The Numbers Tell the Story.

When people ask why I’m going to Japan, the answer is simple—and heartbreaking:

Because the Gospel is nearly absent there.

📊 Let’s look at the numbers:

Only 1 in 100 Japanese people is Christian.

• The majority of the population follows Shinto (48.6%) or Buddhism (46.4%).

• Despite being one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world, Japan is also one of the largest unreached people groups on the planet.

And yet…

Out of over 430,000 missionaries currently serving globally, only 1–2% go to East Asia.

That means very few people are reaching out with the message of Jesus in a place that deeply needs hope, healing, and truth.

Compared to nations like:

Brazil – 87% Christian

Kenya – 85% Christian

The Philippines – 88% Christian

…Christianity in Japan is nearly invisible.

“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” — Matthew 9:37

This verse feels deeply real to me. I’ve walked the streets of Japan. I’ve seen the spiritual hunger hidden behind cultural beauty and societal success. I’ve felt the weight of being one of the only believers in the room.

That’s why I’m called to go.

But right now, I’m still in the U.S.—waiting.

Not because the call has changed.

Not because the need is any less.

But because I’m still building my monthly support team.

How You Can Help:

🙌 PRAY — That hearts would be open, and that doors would open for Gospel conversations.

🤝 SUPPORT — I’m currently looking for monthly partners who want to help bring the hope of Jesus to Japan. Your ongoing giving is what allows me to be fully present and effective once I’m sent.

📣 SHARE — If you know someone who cares about missions, Japan, or reaching the unreached, please pass this along!

Every number represents a soul.

Every prayer matters.

Every gift makes a difference.

Thank you for being part of the story God is writing—both in Japan and through this mission.

With hope,

Nicole Kalowick
